WAVERLY, Iowa (October 9, 2025) – Waverly Utilities (WU) strives to bring world-class services that bring the best value to Waverly. However, the cable television landscape has changed dramatically in recent years, causing cable TV to become higher priced with fewer channel options. With the rise in streaming services and on-demand platforms, WU will discontinue cable TV services in October 2026.
The cost for WU cable TV has continued to increase over the last few years, driven by rising content fees and complex agreements with network owners. WU can no longer provide a TV service at a price that is reasonable or provides value to customers. Traditional cable TV can no longer compete, either in price or in quality, with streaming options powered by access to ultra-fast internet like what is available through WU all-fiber network.
“Change is hard, and this decision was not made lightly,” says Jeff Magsamen, Telecom Director with Waverly Utilities. “Streaming services dominate the way people view their television programs.”
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR CUSTOMERS
Waverly Utilities internet and phone service will not change. WU continues to invest in and upgrade its all-fiber network to deliver world-class internet and telephone services to the community. WU will continue to provide customers with exceptionally reliable and affordable internet service to support customers’ streaming TV choice.
Waverly Utilities will end cable TV service on October 01, 2026. WU is giving customers a year to switch to a new TV provider. Multiple streaming services are available such as YouTube TV, Hulu Live, Fubo and Direct TV. Digital antennas are also an option.
Waverly Utilities wants customer transition to go as smoothly as possible. Waverly Utilities will not increase cable TV rates in 2026 and will keep the $5.00 internet discount for cable subscribers until October 1, 2026. WU cable customers have received notices in the mail that outline the decision and how to make a smooth transition to streaming TV services.
